Welcome to the International Solvent Extraction Conference 2011.
Solvent extraction (SX) is by far one of the most important unit operations in industrial activity, including mining projects. Undoubtedly, solvent extraction is of major commercial importance to the metallurgical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, chemical, petrochemical, biochemical, nuclear energy, catalysis, polymer and material industries, as it is considered the most efficient method of separation of valuable products from complex solid or liquid-feed phases.Specifically in Chile during last three decades, solvent extraction processes have achieved major development in the mining industry, especially in those companies where hydrometallurgical processing constitutes the core of their productivity tasks. Currently in our country there are around thirty solvent extraction plants. Most of these function to recover copper from leaching solutions and mine waters in hydrometallurgical circuits that include leaching-SX-electrowinning stages to produce high quality cathodes. It is also possible to find other SX plants in Chilean mining projects that are designed and constructed for recovering valuable elements like gold molybdenum, rhenium, iodine and, others. In parallel with the industrial development concerning solvent extraction, great efforts have been developing in mining companies, research institutes and academic units aimed towards generating new basic and applied knowledge in this area. These efforts should lead to improvements in the quality and efficiency of the industrial solvent extraction processing, including the generation of new solvents and extractants, new technologies and advancements in their engineering aspects.Now, it is of great significance that the next of the ISEC conferences will be held in our country. ISEC 2011 will create a forum for interaction among professionals and scientists from all over the world by enhancing the dialogue and discussion between production company personnel, the academic and research world, and engineering and supplier companies regarding recent innovations and developments related to solvent extraction operations. I am pleased to invite you to be a part of this new challenge and to participate in the XIX International Solvent Extraction Conference, to be held in Chile. This Conference will take place from 3-7 October 2011 in Santiago and will provide a splendid opportunity for engineers, chemists, biochemists, metallurgists, environmental-field professionals, researchers, technology consultants and suppliers to analyse and discuss the recent progress in solvent extraction. The Conference will cover as areas of interest, the treatment of dissolved metals in liquid solutions, solvent extraction processes, analytical techniques and methods, research and development, and process chemistry and engineering. We expect that ISEC 2011, to be held for the first time in South America in the event’s 48-year history, will be attended by over 300 delegates, making it a very exciting and thought-provoking event.
